A nice soft-boiled egg for breakfast, a hard-boiled egg through a fresh salad, who doesn’t love it? But it is a hassle to cook your egg just right, not too hard, not too soft. Fortunately, you can buy egg boilers and we’ll help you choose the best one.
You often hear people who want to indicate that they are not exactly prince or princess in the kitchen say: cooking an egg is just about doable. Well, to me, people who can do that are cannons in the kitchen. At least, until recently I rarely succeeded.
When I wanted to tap the top of my soft-boiled egg for breakfast, I kept tapping and the contents regularly turned out to be as hard as stone. And when I peeled the eggs for the salad and wanted to cut them, the contents regularly dripped off the cutting board.
Until I bought an egg cooker. Now even my children occasionally dare to ask for one of those delicious eggs. You see, I am a kitchen prince after all Thanks to the egg cooker, that is.
Boiling soft-boiled or hard-boiled eggs, which is the best egg cooker for you?

Best egg cooker of all
Emerio EB-115560
Number 1 in our test is the Emerio EB-115560 egg cooker. You cook six eggs with it, hard or soft. With most egg boilers, it’s very important how much water you fill them with. Not so with the Emerio EB-115560. You fill it with two measuring cups and turn the appliance on. And then it comes: the Emerio EB-115560 tells you in Dutch how hard your eggs are.
Say you want 3 soft-boiled and 3 hard-boiled eggs. Then you wait until the device says the eggs are soft-boiled and you take out 3. You leave the other 3 until it says the eggs are hard-boiled. Check lights also indicate the hardness of the eggs. So you make a perfectly cooked egg for everyone.
- Suitable for 6 eggs
- Hard-boiled, medium-boiled and soft-boiled
- Simultaneous preparation
- Egg piercer built into measuring cup
- Removable egg rack
- Non-stick coating under the rack fragile

With the Cuisinart CEC10E, however, you can also cook 4 poached eggs and even make an omelette from 3 eggs. Best designer egg cooker
Krups F234-70
Some egg boilers immediately catch the eye. The Krups F234-70 is one of those. Not because of the number of eggs you can cook with this egg cooker. Nor because it is the only egg cooker that lets you cook the perfect egg.
For all its simplicity, it is the best egg cooker in terms of design. Perhaps because of the removable water tank with built-in egg piercer, or because of the cord storage space. Design is sometimes something elusive, but we love this egg cooker. Apart from that, of course, it is also just a good egg cooker, with which you cook the perfect egg.
- Attractive, sophisticated design
- Good egg cooker, suitable for 3 eggs
- Hardness adjustable by dosing water
- Signal at end of cooking time
- You can easily store the cord of this egg boiler

Best egg cooker for 1 egg
WMF KITCHENminis
If you usually only need to boil an egg for yourself, then the egg cooker from WMF KITCHENminis comes highly recommended. You can boil 1 or 2 perfect eggs in a short time with this appliance. Depending on the size of the egg and the desired hardness, you fill the egg boiler with water.
When your egg is ready, you will hear a signal. There are also egg cookers for exactly 1 egg, but we chose this egg cooker for 2 eggs as the best. After all, you never know if someone unexpectedly stays over at your place, right?
- Ideal for small households
- Suitable for 1 or 2 boiled eggs
- Hardness to determine
- Signal when the egg is cooked
- Very compact device
- Pretty pricey, though
Best for the microwave
Mika Max
Mika Max is an egg boiler that is not actually an egg boiler. In fact, you place an egg in it and then heat it in the microwave. If you have it on hand anyway, why not use it to boil an egg? With the MIka Max you can. Especially for one-person households, this is an attractive solution.
You don’t need to bring out your egg boiler for that one egg. For a hard-boiled egg, count 5 minutes in a 1,000-watt microwave and 5.5 minutes in an 800-watt one. For a soft-boiled egg, the times are 3 and 3.5 minutes respectively. Be careful though, because the Mika Max gets very hot in the microwave, even on the outside.
- Quick hard- or soft-boiled eggs
- Dishwasher-safe
- Gets hot in the microwave

Frequently asked questions
In the bottom of an egg (the broad side) is a hollow space filled with air. A chick needs that air when it starts pricking the eggshell to come out. If you put a cold egg in hot water, the air will expand. There is a chance the eggshell will crack. You can prevent this by poking a hole in the bottom of the egg with an egg piercer. Also, as the egg white solidifies, the hollow space will be filled, giving you a nice oval egg.
That depends on whether you want a hard-boiled or a soft-boiled egg. And of course, some egg cookers are a little faster than others. The number of eggs you want to cook also plays a role. Overall, you can count on a soft egg being ready in 3 to 5 minutes and a hard egg in five to 10 minutes.
