The best airfryer for fries?
Let’s get right to the point: fries from the hot air fryer are not nearly as crispy compared to fries from a traditional fryer, but they are healthier. As far as we are concerned, Philips airfryers make the best and crispiest fries. Because the technology within Philips airfryer is almost the same, you notice little difference in crispiness.
Read our tips for making crispy fries with an airfryer here.
What are the best budget brands?
Since the patent on Philips’ airfryer technology expired, we have seen more and more brands offering airfryers. Philips remains by far the most expensive brand when it comes to airfryers. Fortunately, there are cheaper alternatives that work just as well. The brands below are all reliable Dutch brands known for providing affordable quality:
- Inventum air fryers
- Tomado air fryers
- Tristar air fryers
- Princess airfryers
What is an airfryer?
Basically, it is a healthy way of frying. An airfryer, also called a hot air fryer, prepares food by circulating hot air. Preparation is fast and healthier than with a regular fryer because less oil is used. In addition to fries, you use the air fryer for snacks, vegetables, meat and even cakes. The latest models also have a cold zone, these are located at the bottom so that crumbs that have sunk to the bottom do not burn.
Below we explain what an airfryer is, how it works, its benefits and what brands of airfryers there are.
How does an airfryer work?
An airfryer heats the air to a temperature of about 200 degrees. The hot air constantly circulates around in the pan, cooking food evenly. This way you don’t have to turn the meat. Using the control panel, you select a program depending on the dish you want to make. With a cheap airfryer, you set the temperature and cooking time yourself, while a more luxurious airfryer selects a program, for example, for grilling a chicken. Set it right, and you will often get perfect results, with an airfryer of our choice!
What are the benefits of an airfryer?
An airfryer has quite a few advantages over a deep fryer. People use the airfryer mainly because they want to eat less fat. Because you don’t need frying oil, the preparation is a lot healthier. Below are all the advantages of an airfryer:
- Healthier cooking thanks to hot air
- Suitable for “deep-frying,” baking, grilling and roasting
- No frying fumes or splashing oil thanks to hot air
- Easier to clean than a deep fryer
- Buy cheaper: no frying oil needed
- Safer to use: exterior does not get hot
An airfryer requires a lot of power, more than a deep fryer. Fortunately, dishes cook quickly thanks to hot air. Below is an overview of the disadvantages:
- Airfryer uses a lot of power
- Reasonably expensive to purchase
- Result not as crispy as a deep fryer
- Take up a relatively large amount of space
- Bereiding duurt langer dan bij een friteuse
History of Airfryer
The Airfryer was first marketed by Philips in 2010 in Berlin. Philips had a patent on the rapid air technology that has since expired. So today there are cheaper alternatives for sale such as Princess airfryers, Inventum airfryers and Tefal airfryers. All have the same technology of hot air circulation. However, there are differences between many models.
Many people think you only use an airfryer to prepare French fries and snacks. Fortunately, much more is possible with an airfryer. For example, an airfryer can bake, roast and grill.
Some airfryers include a recipe book, which is handy since there are many great airfryer recipes that you might otherwise overlook. In addition, many airfryer dishes can be found on the Internet, with the exact temperature and cooking time listed.
French fries and snacks
With an airfryer you make crispy fries and snacks such as a croquette, frikandel or cheese soufflé. French fries and snacks bake for about 22 minutes at 180 degrees.
Complete meals from the airfryer
Had a busy day and little time or time to cook? Fortunately, you can cook complete meals with an airfryer. For example, grill a piece of meat, potatoes and vegetables together or one after the other, depending on the preparation time for each ingredient. This way of cooking also saves you a lot of dishes.
Meat dishes airfryer
An airfryer is capable of cooking food at high temperatures. With the advantage that you can “sear” meat, keeping it nice and juicy on the inside. The possibilities for meat dishes are endless, think of frying a steak, a whole chicken or use your airfryer as a BBQ.
Meat dishes in the airfryer, it’s a lot healthier too. This way, excess fat drips down the rack. The minimum amount of fat will go down. So healthier eating and an airfryer go well together.
Cooking eggs airfryer, is this possible?
In airfryer can come in handy even in the morning when time is short. In addition to making an omelette, use an airfryer to fry or boil an egg. It is also possible to toast buns at the same time as the egg.
Desserts with an airfryer
Baking cake in an airfryer? Yes, it really can! An airfryer is also suitable for making desserts such as a Crème Brûlée or a stewed pear. In addition to classic desserts, use the airfryer for a pie and cake. Plenty of possibilities.

Buying Airfryer, which airfryer is right for me?
Which type of airfryer suits you best depends on a number of things. We can well imagine that it is difficult to choose the right airfryer. The type of airfryer you should choose depends, among other things, on the number of different dishes you want to be able to make, the size of the family and the space you have. For example, if you want to be able to make a whole chicken in an airfryer, you have to take into account that you are sacrificing a lot of space in the kitchen. There are so many that you can’t see the forest for the trees. Since Philips’ patent expired, more and more (cheaper) alternatives have emerged. There are a number of factors to consider when choosing an airfryer.
Are you with a small household or have limited space in the kitchen? Then choose a compact airfryer with a capacity of up to one liter. For a household with 4 to 6 people, you need a large airfryer with a capacity of more than a liter.
- Small: up to 1 liter capacity
- Medium: Airfryer 1 liter capacity
- Large: more than 1 liter capacity
For many airfryer brands, the load capacity is indicated by L, XL, XXL and XXXL.
Which bin technology do you choose?
Depending on the brand and type, airfryers come with different baking techniques, namely 3D Air Pulse technology (Tefal), RapidAir technology (Philips) or TurboStar technology (Philips). The difference between the techniques and the result is minimal. With Philips’ TurboStar technology, the released fat is immediately passed through, making your cooking even healthier.
Automatic baking programs
If you buy a cheap airfryer, you can often only set the temperature and time. More luxurious airfryers allow you to select different baking programs. This is convenient, so you don’t have to look up the baking time and temperature yourself.
Air Fryer accessories
With accessories you expand your airfryer: so you can use it to make pizza, bake cake or even make an egg sandwich.
For baking, grilling, roasting or frying, you need several airfryer accessories. These are included with the airfryer or can be purchased separately. With cheaper airfryers, you often receive fewer accessories than with a more luxurious airfryer.
Most common Airfryer accessories:
- Grill grid: this is almost always included.
- Snack Distributor
- Grill pan
- Baking tray
- toast rack
- Baking form
For example, to grill chicken you need a grill pan or grill rack and to bake a cake you need a baking pan. So before you decide which airfryer is best for you, it is important to know what you will use the airfryer for.
With an airfryer, you don’t have to deal with caked-on frying fat and you don’t have to change frying fat, making it easy to clean, also because of this you don’t have a minimum amount of grease. Afterwards, you need to clean the inside and the used accessories under the tap or in the dishwasher. Keep in mind that the airfryer accessories take up quite a lot of space in the dishwasher.
You often read on the Internet that an airfryer is easy to clean, but that is not entirely true. An airfryer mainly gets dirty from greasy ingredients, spices and sauces. Because of the high temperatures, everything cakes nicely. After use, it can be quite difficult to clean the frying basket properly, but it is important that you do this properly.
When choosing an airfryer, you can choose Philips or other alternatives. Below we discuss the well-known and popular brands:
Philips is the inventor of the airfryer. Recently it no longer has a patent and so other brands are also allowed to sell airfryers. At Philips, there are different product lines, namely: essential, Daily collection, Premium, Viva and Avance. The size of the airfryer is referred to as L, XL and XXL. For a small household you will be fine with the size L, a larger family looks at airfryers with the size XL and XXL.
- Philips Essential: basic models with all essential functions and accessories.
- Philips Daily Collection: smaller models with basic functions and an attractive price tag.
- Philips Premium: more luxurious airfryers with digital display, various useful functions, more powerful airfryers with more load capacity.
- Philips Viva: replaced by Essential
- Philips Avance: replaced by Premium.
Philips is the right place to go for airfryers around 100 euros such as the Philips Airfryer HD9216/80 and more luxurious large-capacity airfryers such as the Philips Viva Airfryer XXL HD9630/90.
Besides Philips, Tefal is a popular brand for airfryers. Tefal’s first airfryer was the Tefal Actifry, which does not have a drawer like the Philips airfryer. Instead, it has a tray with a stirring blade that flips the food while cooking. Today, Tefal also has airfryers with a drawer such as the Tefal Easy Fry, Fry Delight and Ultimate Fry. The major difference with Philips airfryers is mainly in the shape and design of the products.
Tefal airfryers are a bit cheaper than Philips airfryers. Tefal’s cheapest airfryer is the efal Easy Fry Compact EY3018
Inventum air fryers
Inventum is a Dutch brand that sells affordable kitchen appliances including airfryers. You can buy a simple Inventum airfryer for 60 to 80 euros and a more luxurious airfryer with a larger load capacity costs more than 80 euros. The difference in size is indicated by XL and XXL at Inventum just like Philips.
The best-selling Inventum airfryer is the Inventum GF250HL which costs less than 60 euros. This small airfryer is suitable for a small family there are no accessories included.
Princess hot air fryers
Princess, like Inventum, is a Dutch company that focuses mainly on selling affordable kitchen appliances. Princess calls its hot air fryers “aerofryer” and sells a wide range of aerofryers XL and XXL at an affordable price. Looking for a small airfryer then we recommend these: Princess 182020 Digital Aerofryer XL For a larger airfryer we come to this one: Princess 182050 Family Aerofryer XXL Both recommendations cost less than 100 euros.
Tristar, like Princess, is a subsidiary of Smartwares Group. Tristar airfryers are the best airfryers for when you are on a budget. You can buy a Tristar airfryer for just a few tens of dollars. Also with Tristar, you can choose from airfryers with a small or large load capacity with or without extra baking programs and accessories. The best deal as far as we are concerned is the: Tristar FR-6980 Mini Crispy Fryer which costs less than 40 euros.
Conclusion: what is the best airfryer?
The best airfryer, in our opinion, is irrevocably the Philips Premium Airfryer XXL HD9650/90 If you’re looking for a feature-packed appliance, for large families, that also delivers top performance, this is the best choice. You will fry delicious fries and snacks with it, but also prepare other food is a piece of cake. If the price of this airfryer is a bit too steep for you, then the Inventum GF350HLD is a good and inexpensive alternative. Not for nothing is the best buy according to our test and according to the Consumers’ Association.
Looking for a compact airfryer, we think the Tefal Easy Fry Compact EY3018 is the best choice.
In general, we dare say that there are no really bad airfryers on the market. Of course, those from Philips are the very best, but also with all other brands in our test you make tasty fries. Sometimes it takes more time, sometimes the controls are less user-friendly, and not every airfryer is as easy to clean, but the end result is always acceptable. It all depends on how much you have to spend and which device you prefer.
